In recent years, parents and activists have asked school officials to stop offering so-called “junk
food” in schools—i. e., soda and other sugary drinks. These actions are an effort to combat childhood
obesity in America. Of course, the childhood obesity problem is scary, but banning soda in schools is
not the way to solve it. Before taking soda machines out of schools, there are some important points to
consider. First of all, kids will find a way to drink soda if they want it. Soda machines also give kids more
choices at school. Finally, soda machines generate profit for schools. Therefore, school officials should not
ban soda machines.
Kids will find a way to drink soda if they want it. They may not be able to get soda at school, but
they can get it from other places. They can bring bottles or cans of soda from home when they come to
school. They can buy soda at grocery stores or minimarts. They can also buy soda in vending machines
at malls and other favorite hangouts. Banning soda machines at school does not deter kids from drinking
soda.
Soda machines give kids more choices of beverages to enjoy besides water and milk. When kids
have options, they will learn to make healthful choices earlier in life. Health classes teach students about
the harmful effects of drinking too much soda. Students can learn to drink soda responsibly when given
the chance. On the other hand, it can be more harmful if kids are deprived of such choices. If kids do not
have access to soda all day at school, they may drink something healthier
