Read the following excerpt from an article by a literary critic. In Dr. Seuss's controversial children's story, The Butter
Battle Book, two factions who oppose each other for petty
reasons create ever-more-elaborate weapons with which to
threaten each other. Eventually each faction develops a
weapon that can destroy the other side utterly.
Although perhaps not obvious to the children who read the
story, The Butter Battle Book mirrors the arms race of the
Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union
that took place between the late 1940s and roughly 1990.
Through the story Seuss makes a serious statement
against the Cold War's necessity.
Which statement most accurately describes the inference the author is
making and the historical context on which the inference is based?
