Montessori education is an approach which develops and educates the child physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally. Her work emphasized concrete rather than abstract learning, learning by touching and doing and not just by looking at, reading or writing about something.

She claimed that children learn through their own errors how to make the correct decision, without the teacher having to point it out to them.

She recognized that each child learns at a different peace, and therefore needs an individual learning programme.

Many of her ideas are now part of our common knowledge, language, and thinking about children and education, for example the use of child-sized furniture and tools in kindergarten and primary schools.

She believed that vertical grouping across a three-year age span allows younger children to learn from older children and builds up a sense of community.
