Even though everyone knows that the subway will be the first target for terrorists,' the reader would think 'what could be possibly more dangerous than this?' and he uses this to emphasise how dangerous the cab is for the reader to understand. He chose to take a cab because he had bought his favourite food so he rather take the cab rather than reluctantly take his bags into the crowded, dark and underworld place, when he could just effortlessly take a cab back home this is evidenced it the text.
