The Nineteenth Amendment The Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution gave women the right to vote. Passed in 1920, this amendment was the result of the work of thousands of women over the course of many years. Activists such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton worked tirelessly to help women earn the right to vote. Anthony and Stanton helped create national groups that fought for women's rights. Prior to the Nineteenth Amendment passing, some northern and western states allowed women to vote, but the activists supporting women's rights wanted it to be a federal law that women could vote. Finally, on August 26th 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment passed when Tennessee became the final state to ratify the amendment.
