1# Read the excerpt from the story Be the Best you Can Be:

Danny's bellowing voice carried across the field. "No! you need to pass the ball! Stop cradling it and pass!"

Danny was the team captain of the lacrosse team. He was one of the best players in the league. He was good, but he could be malicious. That morning, my playing technique was taking the brunt of Danny's harsh criticism.

"You really need to learn to pass better, Finn. you're letting the team down!"

Practice ended, and as Danny strode swiftly back toward the changing rooms, I hung my head and looked down at the green grass of the field. At the start of practice, the lush, green grass had made me smile. I relished being outside and playing lacrosse with my teammates. Sure, many of them were better than me, but I enjoyed the game and being part of a team. I was always the one cheering the loudest for my friends when they threw the ball across the goal line. I wished Danny would cheer for us instead of shouting callous things. It was starting to ruin the game so much for me that I was thinking of quitting.

Select how the narrator's point of view influences the description of events.

A. The reader knows how both Danny and Finn feel about his yelling.
B. The reader knows how the whole team feels about Danny's yelling.
C. The reader only knows how Danny feels about his yelling.
D. The reader only knows how Finn feels about Danny's yelling.

Read the excerpt from the drama The Snow Monster:

Scene 1

A fire crackles inside a cozy cabin. Reuben and Bailey sit close by on a sofa, peacefully sipping hot chocolate from large mugs. Another young boy, Quinn, bursts through the door.

Quinn: (Huffing) You'll never believe what I've just seen!

Reuben and Bailey turn quickly in surprise. Bailey spills some of his hot chocolate down his shirt.

Bailey: Ouch! (Shaking his head, as he pats at the spilled liquid) Quinn, you really must stop doing that!

Quinn: (Puzzled as he pulls off his coat) Doing what?

Bailey: Rushing in here and shouting about your latest impossible sighting. Yesterday it was a penguin. The day before, it was a flying reindeer.

Quinn: Aw, c'mon! Anyone could mistake a crow for a penguin from a distance.

Reuben: Only someone as blind as a bat, or a boy who was pulling our legs and telling tales.

Quinn: I wasn't lying! This time is different, I swear! This time it's a real-life snow monster!

Bailey: (With a slight squeak) You saw a snow monster? Like a yeti?

Quinn: Yes! (Pauses) Well, I didn't see it exactly …

Bailey and Reuben groan.

Quinn: Okay, okay. I know I sometimes let my imagination run wild, but this time I have proof! On my way back from the sledding hill, I came across the strangest sight: giant footprints in the snow!

Reuben: (Sarcastically) Footprints? In the snow? It must be a monster! What else could have possibly made footprints in the snow? Oh, yeah–any animal in the area!

Based on Quinn's character traits, what might be a possible ending to this story that is different than the original ending?

A. They find a bear in a cave and run away from it.
B. They find monsters in a cave and run away from them.
C. They take a picture of a bear and become famous.
D. They take a picture of a yeti and become famous.
