Every sport Wendy played, it seemed she was
always second string, and softball was no different.
Wendy had gotten used to warming the bench, like a
sack of potatoes that just took up space. Then, the first-
string pitcher, Carrie, who could throw strikes like a
major leaguer, had gone home sick in the middle of a
game.
"Wendy, warm up that pitching arm." Coach Ramsey
had told her. She had taken the full allotted time, 20
minutes, to do just that, hoping her Jell-o legs would
steady themselves and her arm wouldn't feel like it
wasn't attached to her body. As she walked out to the
pitcher's mound, her life was suddenly a slow-motion
movie, and Wendy was the star. The only problem was
that she didn't know her lines. Rolling her shoulders
around to work the stiffness out, she held the dirt
encrusted softball in her tan leather mitt, and prayed her
arm would quit shaking as she made the pitch.
Steeriker the umpire bellowed. Wendy's
teammates on the bench rose in one fluid motion and
roared their approval, as a tentative grin spread slowly
across her face
