Summary 1: In the bottom of the ninth, Mudville trails. The last one outside go to Cooney, Burrows, and Casey. Mudville loses 4-2.
Summary 2: The poem "Casey at bat" by Earnest Lawrence Thayer is about a baseball hero named Casey who plays for the Mudville nine. At opening the game looks bad for Mudville. They are losing 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth. Then Conney and Burrows are both out first. If Casey gets to bat, he'll surely save the day; but Flynn and Blake go to bat first, and Neither is likely to score. But, look! Each player bags a hit, and the crowd goes wild with joy. With two men on up steps the mighty Casey. Strike one! The strike two! The crowd screams. Cast signals for silence. His smile turns to a frown; his anger signals his resolve. He"ll slam the ball out of the park. But the air is shattered by his swing. Somewhere men where laughing, the poet says. But there is no joy in Mudville - mighty Casey has struck out! " Casey at the bat" in a comic way reminds us that even the mighty can fall.
