         Tom Sawyer demonstrates several character traits when he and his friends become lost in the woods. First, Tom is very observant of the things that are occurring around him when he awakes. He notices many of nature's details in the dawn. The text says, "The marvel of Nature shaking off sleep and going to work unfolded itself to the musing boy." In addition, Tom exhibits patience, as he waits for the caterpillar to start crawling on him. The author writes that "he sat as still as a stone, with his hopes rising and falling, by turns, as the creature still came toward him or seemed inclined to go elsewhere..." Finally, Tom shows gentleness in his interaction with the wood's creatures. Unlike many young boys, he does not disturb or harass any of them as they go their ways. He quietly watches bugs, birds, butterflies, and a squirrel with great contentment. This excerpt reveals a lot about the good side of Tom's character.
