Purpose: to demonstrate your knowledge of how to analyze an author’s voice.
Reread Wilfred Owen’s poem “Dulce et Decorum Est'' and its introductory information. Also, read Owen’s biography and 3 of his other poems. This information will help you understand Owen’s experiences as a soldier during WWI, and how those experiences shaped his feelings about war. Notice how Owen portrays his feelings through his writing.

Write a 5 paragraph descriptive (analysis) essay about Owen’s use of voice in his poem, “Dulce et Decorum Est.” To review how to write an essay go to Module 3 Section 3 text. (M3S3 Text is published for you to read.)
Introductory paragraph: Include a thesis statement that describes Owen’s voice.
1st body paragraph: explain how Owen’s use of simile impacts his voice in his poem. You need to include 2 pieces of textual evidence. This means that in your paragraph you need to have 2 examples of similes, from the poem. Tell how each example contributes to the development of his voice.
2nd body paragraph: explain how Owen’s use of imagery impacts his voice in his poem. You need to include 2 pieces of textual evidence. Tell how each example contributes to the development of his voice.
3rd body paragraph: explain how Owen’s personal feelings about the war come through in his voice.
Conclusion paragraph: rephrase your thesis with a deeper understanding, summarize your main points, and end with a statement that conveys the point you want your reader to take away.
