We had trouble finding our way through the fog. Nights at sea were dark, but nights spent sailing through bad weather were exceptionally dark. It was when we looked up and saw the St. Elmo's fire burning around our mast that we knew we had to keep going. We were all amazed by this natural phenomenon caused by static electricity clinging to the ship's mast. It appeared to light our way in the blackest of nights, and, by its light, we fought against the storm and made our way into the marina. We all hoped that we'd never face something that scary again, but I know that if I must, I have Mother Nature's light giving me the power to persevere. In this passage, the St. Elmo's Fire is a symbol of
A.
endurance because it boosts the sailors' strength.
B.
despair because it breaks the sailors' hearts.
C.
ignorance because it shows the sailors' neglect.
D.
kindness because it warms the sailors' bodies.
