The themes of hard work and pride were developed by the author in story, Rules of the Game.

1. Hard work:

Waverly Place Jong worked hard to learn the game of chess even though it was her brothers that received the chessboard as a Christmas gift. She was rewarded for her hard work because she became an excellent chess player and won several awards.

I found out about all the whys later. I read the rules and looked up all the big words in a dictionary. I borrowed  books from the Chinatown library. I studied each chess piece, trying to absorb the power each contained.

I attended more tournaments, each one farther away from home. I won all games, in all divisions.

2. Pride:

Waverly's mother developed an undue sense of pride by wanting to always show off her daughter and this annoyed the young girl. She also pressured her daughter to 'win more and lose less' even after Waverly had told her that it was sometimes necessary to lose in order to win the game.

My mother would proudly walk with me, visiting  many shops, buying very little. "This my daughter Wave-ly Jong," she said to whoever looked her way.
