Instructions Using the ideas you previously wrote in your 2.04 Compare and Contrast Organizer on the two helpers, you will write the introduction paragraph of your compare and contrast article.
Step 1: Identify the two articles you read in lesson 2.04 about the two teen hero helpers you will be comparing/contrasting in your compare/contrast article:
“Minutes that Matter” (Brittany Bergquist and her 12 year old brother provide cell phones to soldiers.)
“Defeating Dragons” (Alaskan Teenagers train and become first responders.)
“Food that Fuels” (Cassandra Lin re-uses restaurant cooking oil to fuel cars and buses.)
Step 2: Review the steps and parts of a good introduction from the lesson:
An EFFECTIVE introduction paragraph with ALL parts looks like this:
It has been estimated that there are around 60 million horses and five billion rats in the world. (hook sentence with an interesting fact) Rats and horses might not be two animals that come to mind when you think of helpers. However, there are many people in the world who consider these animals to be real heroes. (important information about the hero groups that transitions to the thesis) HeroRATS and Gentle Carousel Therapy Horses have many differences, but both work toward a common goal of positively affecting their communities.(thesis statement)
Step 3: Plan Your Introduction.**This planning chart is not part of your final grade and is meant to help you plan a complete introduction paragraph.
HOOK *What question or interesting fact could you start your article with to hook your reader into wanting to read your article? Write your HOOK here:(one -two sentences)
IMPORTANT INFORMATION Introduce the two teen hero groups that you read about.
**You can write one sentence about each teen group and how they are heroes. Write your general information HERE; (one-two sentences)

*can be support with valid evidence such as facts, expert testimony, and research
*does not include feelings or emotions
*is written in the third person point of view (do not use the pronoun “I” or the phrase “I think”) This should be a sentence at the end of your paragraph that identifies the central idea of the essay you will be writing. This is a Compare and Contrast essay and should compare and contrast the two hero groups you read about.
**Review pages 5-7 in the lesson to see examples of strong and weak thesis statements Write your THESIS here: (one sentence)
