Create an example of the narrowing process shown in your lesson (the marine life to shark attacks example) starting with the topic "Education." Umbrella and Narrowed Topics
There are two kinds of topics: umbrella topics (sometimes referred to simply as “broad topics”) and narrowed (or limited) topics. An umbrella topic is something like technology or literature or art. The example above about the play Hamlet is an umbrella topic. Under umbrella topics are hundreds or thousands of possibilities. For example, the umbrella topic of “technology” is massive! It would include anything from cell phones, computers, printing press, cars, speakers, head-phones, TVs, harvesters, lamps, etc..
Even when you choose one of the categories under the umbrella, you still don't have it narrow enough. Because the topic computers can include topics like history of the computer, parts of a computer, purposes of a computer, computer games, computer equipment, programming, graphics design, etc.. You must narrow the topic down into a manageable subject.

Here is an example of how a topic can be narrowed:

I. Ocean

A. Marine life

1. Sharks

a. Great Hammerheads (depending on the angle you want to take, this may need to be narrowed further; because there is general information, and then there is a point to prove).

1). Feeding habits

a) What they eat

b) How often they eat

c) Hunting grounds

2) Reproduction

3) Body structure

4). Level of endangerment and threats to their existence

b. Shark attacks!

1) Mistaken identity

2) Famous shark attacks

3) Preventing shark attacks
