What is Poetry? Use the text to answer each question below.
1. A poetic form is a type of poem with specific rules for thyme, thythm and/or subject matter. Two poetic
forms are haikus and sonnets,
A haiku is a traditional Japanese poetic form. It consists of three unrhymed lines with specific syllable
counts: five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second and live in the third. Haikus are often
about nature and the seasons.
A sonnet is a 14-line poem with a set thyme scheme and a particular syllable pattern called lambic
pentometer, Different types of sonnets have different thyme schemes. An English, or Shakespearean,
sonnet usually follows the rhyme scheme of ABABCOCDEFEFGG. The final two lines, a couplet,
summarize the main ides of the poem.
