There are approximately 196 countries in the world and almost every single one of them celebrates Christmas differently. Christmas in Mexico (Navidad) is a million times different than the Christmas that we know and celebrate in the U.S. In Mexico there are lots of events that happen before January 6th, which is Epiphany day (The day of the Three Wise Men) also known as “El Dia de los Reyes”. I am will be explaining every all of  the events that take place during Christmas (Navidad) all the way up to January 6th.

When do the celebrations start? The celebrations start on a very special day to all Mexicans, December 12th. What occurs on December 12th is El Dia de la Virgen de la Guadalupe (the day of the Virgin Mary). For this celebration people from all different parts of Mexico travel miles and miles to get to la Basilica de la Virgen de Guadalupe, which is a very famous Roman Catholic Church in Mexico. The people come to leave flowers and to sing traditional Mexican songs for the Virgin Mary. Some come to ask the Virgin Mary for miracles and others come to give their thanks for everything to her. There is a long story to why this celebration occurs. The story takes place on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico on December 12, 1531. A villager named Juan Diego was walking on the hill and came upon the appearance of the Virgin Mary. She told Juan to do her a favor of asking the Bishop to build a church on the hill of Tepeyac. Juan hurried down to the church and told the Bishop of his encounter with the Virgin Mary and that she wanted a church to be built on the hill of Tepeyac. The Bishop thought he was being absurd and ignored Juan. The Virgin Mary once again reappeared to Juan, she told him to pick all the flowers that were gro...

Whoever finds a little baby figure inside the piece of rosca they cut will have to either host or bring something to the party called Candelaria. Candelaria is a fest/party that takes place on February 2nd, where the family gets together for one last time during the holidays, it’s basically the celebration to end all celebrations. But sometimes the family may choose not to do Candelaria. Which is why some Mexican may end their Christmas on January 6th or February 2nd.
