What liberty we have when out of love, Our heart’s back in its place, our nerves unstrung,

Time cannot tease us, and once more we move

In step with it. Out of love we’re strong,

Without its yearnings and the way it makes

All virtues vices. Steady liberty

Is our element and no heartbreaks

Can touch or take us. We are nobly free.

But how long can we live within this state?

Don’t we miss the slow encroachment of

Possessive passion? Don’t we half-await

Its cruel enchantments which no longer have

Power over us? O we are obdurate,

Begging for freedom, hankering for love.
