in public, it may seem as if they are uniform and alike, but marjane sees her friends as all completely different individuals with different tastes and styles. the opening shows her in a class photo, lines up just like the panel shown here. the inclusion of these frames shows that although they must wear uniform and similar outfits, it is for personal belief and religious reasons. even if the world sees them like that, their own personal lives differ than what the outside world sees.
