I think Sol felt very angry and irritated that he discovered that Alex had been ordered to spend with him. For example, in the test it says, “‘Wait a minute, Alex. You’re not a volunteer? I’m your sentence? I’m your PUNISHMENT?’ ‘Oh my gosh, Sol. I always assumed you knew. I was assigned to spend hundred hours here by the juvenile court, with the patient of my mom’s choice. She picked you because she said we would be a good match.’… ‘And this is ‘no big deal’? You’re lucky to be alive, Alex. And you DIDN'T kill anyone. ‘No big deal’ he says. You’re even more meshuggeh than I thought.’”( Notes from the Midnight Driver, 110 111) This explains that Sol discovered that Alex wasn’t a volunteer and that he was forced to stay with Sol. Alex was just obeying what the judge says. He became angrier when Alex said he got arrested for drunk driving. I think Sol feels this way because he thought Alex was a volunteer. I think Sol was actually happy to be with someone other than being with a nurse everyday. I think Sol also feels that way because I think he liked having some company with someone who had volunteered to spend time with him.
