The group consists of five men and one of them was bitten by a poisonous snake and is unable to dig alone, being carried by one of his friends, who also pulls the injured friend's horse. The men were on their way to a northern state where they would look for jobs and better living conditions, but they had to go out of their way to look for a city where their friend could be treated. The journey is long and the men talk among themselves about maintaining hope even in the uncertainty that follows them.
