A story's conflict demonstraits a character's strengths by showing you their ability, and method of overcoming obsticles.

When a conflict is written it's purpose is to move the story along, but also to expose the character. When there is an issue the character is forced to interact with it in some way. Whether this means they overcome the issue, or fall victim to it, we can see why. It demonstraites personality, strength, intellegence, and merit.
