recently, in a large american city, a man was convicted of manslaughter because he ran a red light, hit another car, and killed the driver. the judge sentenced him to five years' probation and ordered him to pay during each of those years into a trust fund for the dead man's child. since the convicted man has two small children, the payments will be a strain. if he had been sent to prison, however, his family would suffer more because he would have no salary. the victim's family would not have benefited, either.
