A comet's journey around the Sun may take hundreds of years. As the comet at last approaches the Sun, bits of ice and other material are thrown back from the Sun, creating the comet's "tail." After the comet has passed the Sun, its tail gradually disappears until there is little more left
of the visible comet than a ball of ice and gas hurtling through space.
