Medieval ( chivalric ) romances were popular in aristocratic circles in Medieval Europe. They were characterized by marvel-filled adventures and a hero-like character that goes on a quest for love and fairness. There was also a villain which was seen as threat to the happiness of the hero.

The hero is usually a knight abiding the code of honor. He is brave and selfless, very loyal to his lord and he fights with his life for the woman he loves.

The woman ( the temptress ) is often idealized by the hero and put on the pedestal. There is usually a couple of men fighting for her love. She holds a certain amount of power over them.

The trickster is the villain that is after the hero's woman and his title and possession. There is usually a battle/fight in the novel where both characters fight against one another and the hero wins. The trickster is clever and ruthless using unlawful methods to achieve his goals.

The hospitable host is usually a friend of the hero who supports him.
