The ideas that are repeated throughout the text are Mortality, because of how easily it is to die in war, futility, because of how pointless war it, and equality, because that's what they are fighting for. The theme of "An Episode of War" is that war will kill people, even innocent ones.

The theme of this story is that war destroys everything. It is shown through the deaths, fear, and pain it causes these soldiers. One example of this theme is a soldier being killed while drinking a cup of coffee. This shows how war kills innocent people, or vulnerable people. The lieutenant with the wound not only had to go through the pain of being shot, but also the fear of being amputated. After his arm was amputated, he went home and had to heal not only physically from war and the wound, but mentally from the stress and pain of it all.
