What might explain why Randy turns away from Kathy? Kathy looked across the schoolyard and gasped. Was that really Randy, the boy she had a crush on in elementary school? He had liked her too, but they hadn't seen each other in years. Across the yard, Randy was looking forward to using high school as a fresh start. His mother had died when he was in middle school, and he was anxious to put the pain of the past behind him. Randy turned and met Kathy's gaze; a brief look of recognition passed between them.
