In the memoir of "A 400-year old woman", Mukherjee uses a lot of allusions. such as, "The foreign-born, the Third World immigrant with non-Western religions and non-European languages and appearance, can be as American as any steerage passenger from Ireland, Italy, or the Russian Pale." In this sentence, she uses the term, "steerage passenger" which alludes to the immigrants coming to the USA easily by using a trans-Atlantic ship from the European countries like, Ireland, Italy and Russia. In this allusion, Mukherjee is also disturbed about the fact that someone from Europe with white skin and Christian faith is easily accepted as an American, rather than a mixed-skinned person from Asia with no Christian faith.
