Read the excerpt from “Tears of Autumn” by Yoshiko Uchida. Usually, her mother didn't speak of it until they were lying side by side on their quilts at night. Then, under the protective cover of darkness, she would suggest one name and then another, hoping that Hana would indicate an interest in one of them. What does the imagery in these lines suggest? Hana's mother wants to keep their conversations secret. Hana and her mother only have time to talk to each other at night. Hana's mother is uncomfortable talking about suitors.
