Purpose- Why did the author write? What did he or she want to accomplish? Reflection? Spiritual growth? Political change? Cultural change? Is it persuasive or personal?
Audience- who would have wanted to read this? Who do you think the publishers thought of when they paid to print it?
Style- Is it poetry? Fiction? Non-fiction? Journal? Essay? Political statement? Political persuasive essay? Are sentences long or short? What kinds of words stand out? What impressions do you have of the author based on words and sentences? Are they content? Happy? Angry? Itching for change?
