Skiing
(1) Last winter, my family took a vacation to Colorado. (2) It was my first
experience with “real” snow. (3) Sure, it snows sometimes here in Texas, but I was
amazed by the amount of snow that was in Colorado. (4) The best part of the trip was
that I learned how to ski for the very first time.(5) I learned many valuable lessons from
my experience.
(6) On the first day, I took a beginner’s class to learn skiing basics. (7) There I
learned how to balance on the skis, to stop by angling the skis into a “V”, and to turn by
shifting your weight on the skis. (8) The hardest part of the lesson was the ski lift. (9)
After a day of lessons, I felt ready to hit the big slopes.
(10) The next day, I went skiing with my dad who is a good skier. (11) We
looked over the trail map and decided to start on a green route, the easiest to ski. (12)
The ski lift took us to the beginning of the trail. (13) I was able to get off of the lift
without embarrassing myself. (14) I looked down the trail and couldn’t believe that this
could be an “easy” trail. (15) It was long and steep than the training slopes. (16) I
immediately got knots in my stomach. (17) I said to my dad, “I don’t know if I can do
this.” (18) He told me that he believed in me. (19) Then, we reviewed what I had
learned. (20) My dad promised me that we would go slowly. (21) He also promised to
stay behind me to help me in case I fell.
(22) I took a deep breath and said, “Okay, let’s go.” (23) Once I got going, all
the things I had learned the previous day kicked in. (24) I was skiing!! (25) I will admit
that I did fall a few times, but my dad was always there to help me. (26) By the time
we got to the bottom of the slope, I knew that I was hooked. (27) I couldn’t wait to
tackle the next trail!
(28) By the end of the trip, I was skiing more difficult trails and was gaining a lot
of confidence in my skiing ability. (29) I even tried to jump off some of the bumps in the
trails. (30) My dad was still skiing behind me but now it was because he was trying to
keep up.
(31) My first experience skiing taught me that learning a new skill can be scarey
at first. (32) However, if you just give it a try, you might find that you are really good at
it. (33) It really helped to learn the basics first. (34) Then, it just takes patience and
practice. (35) I can’t wait for our next winter vacation. (36) I hope we can go skiing
again!
