The text says that the rest of the loot after a raid that was not taken by the leader was "given to the men to divide up, so that no one may go cheated of an equal share." Distributing wealth fairly was important to the Greeks, so being called greedy was a disrespectful insult.

"the day we found the sharks' teeth" i would say highlight the element of the plot as it sets its boundaries and centers the adventures of them being on a boat and cleaning spit of sand.
