Independent and Subordinate Clauses
[18A] A clause is a group of words that is part of a sentence and has a subject and a verb.
[18A.1] An independent (main) clause can stand alone as a sentence because it expresses a complete
thought
[18A.2] A subordinate (dependent) clause cannot stand alone as a sentence because it does not
express a complete thought.
