Why are there four hemispheres

The four hemispheres of the Earth are the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern hemispheres. The Equator, or 0 degrees latitude, divides the Earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres. At 0 degrees longitude, the Prime Meridian divides Earth into the Eastern and Western hemispheres. The Northern hemisphere has a greater land mass than the Southern hemisphere. North America, Europe, most parts of Asia and parts of Africa are in the Northern hemisphere. The entire region of Central America also lies in the Northern hemisphere. A major part of South America, parts of Africa and the whole of Australia are in the Southern hemisphere. The Southern hemisphere is covered by a greater mass of water, including the South Atlantic Ocean, parts of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
