The treaty between Massasoit, the chief of the Wampanoag, and the pilgrims set down a non aggression pact between them that included coming to one anothers aide in times of trouble and basically giving each other the right to be judge jury and executioner over anyone in the opposing party who intentionally broke that peace Since the Wampanoag had been having serious issues with their neighbors the Narragansetts it was in their best interest to make this treaty with the settlers who had access to guns and cannons. These weapons helped keep the peace with the other tribes through fear. For all accounts the settlers understood this but they also understood that Jamestown had been a massacre because they had not integrated with the local populace so they were willing to come into this agreement to keep themselves alive. So yes the treaty was equally fair to both sides as it kept both sides alive for the 50 years it was enacted.
