You want to adopt a dog and you’ve decided to go to a shelter for a puppy. A shelter dog is a great idea! But before you lose your heart to a cute pup, take a look at the adults, too. Older dogs may be less fluffy and adorable, but they have many advantages over a puppy. There are fewer surprises and less work when introducing an adult dog into your home. And sadly, they need you more. A senior dog can blend into your life more smoothly. Many were pets before and are already housebroken and socialized. They are long past the age of chewing everything they see, and often know basic commands. Adult dogs need less attention and exercise, and are happy to simply spend time with you without demanding constant attention. They won’t surprise you by growing bigger or developing an unexpected personality, either. Convenience is a good reason to adopt a senior dog, but an even better one is compassion. Shelters and rescue groups report that senior animals are the least likely to be adopted. As a result, they are often the first to be euthanized when crowding occurs. Even in no-kill settings, many languish, caged and unwanted, for years. These older but wiser dogs will love you wholeheartedly for rescuing them. Write an effective conclusion paragraph for this essay.
