Read the two passages below. Then compare how each passage uses specific evidence to support its claim. Passage 1:
The best way to reduce our environmental impact is to use public transportation. Many public buses and light rails use alternative forms of energy that release 25 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than cars. Also, mass transit reduces the number of vehicles on the road by almost 30 percent, which lessens traffic and provides a more pleasant commute.

Passage 2:
Officials from the Department of Transportation believe that public transit will not be built quickly enough to be a real option for many people in small to medium-sized cities. Therefore, we need to focus our efforts on making sure our personal vehicles are as energy efficient as possible. This not only reduces costs to individual drivers, but it also reduces the detrimental effect on the environment.

Read the excerpt from warriors don't cry. as we approached behind them, we could see only the clusters of white people that stretched for a distance of two blocks along the entire span of the school building. my mind could take in the sights and sounds only one by one: flashing cameras, voices shouting in my ears, men and women jostling each other, old people, young people, people running, uniformed police officers walking, men standing still, men and women waving their fists, and then the long line of uniformed soldiers carrying weapons just like in the war movies i had seen. which words create the mood in the excerpt? check all that apply.

Which excerpt from the war of the worldseffectively reveals how the author relates the climax of the narrative through the narrator's thoughts? the war of the worldsall this had happened with such swiftness that i had stood motionless, dumbfounded and dazzled by the flashes of light. had that death swept through a full circle, it must inevitably have slain me in my surprise. but it passed and spared me, and left the night about me suddenly dark and unfamiliar. and then, with a renewed horror, i saw a round, black object bobbing up and down on the edge of the pit. it was the head of the shopman who had fallen in, but showing as a little black object against the hot western sun. at that time it was quite clear in my own mind that the thing had come from the planet mars, but i judged it improbable that it contained any living creature. i thought the unscrewing might be automatic. my mind ran fancifully on the possibilities of its containing manuscript, on the difficulties in translation that might arise, whether we should find coins and models in it, and so forth. yet it was a little too large for assurance on this idea. i felt an impatience to see it opened.
