When the Pilgrims sailed over from England on the Mayflower, they probably had no idea that the Wampanoag would be helpful to their survival. The name Wampanoag is said to mean "easterners" or "People of the Light." They taught the Pilgrims to use fish for fertilizer and plant maize(corn), beans, and squash. These crops are known as the Three Sisters. The Wampanoag used storage pits to store food and seed during the winter. They dug deep holes into the ground and lined them with stones and bulrush mats, woven mats from the leaves of a bulrush plant. The pits provided a nice storage area for their food and seed during the winter. In the Fall of 1621, the Pilgrims had a successful harvest. To show their gratitude, they invited the Wampanoag to join them for their first Thanksgiving feast. Which sentence best summarizes the text above? a.
