Both of the mothers in Fish Cheeks by Amy Tan and My Mothers Garden by Katlin Greenridge were role models because they both wanted what is best for their daughters and both of them are different from everyone else but they still make the best of the situation. In Fish Cheeks, the mom doesn't want her daughter to be something she is not. She doesn't want her daughter to try to change just to try to impress a boy. In My Mothers Garden, the mom goes back to school to try to get them out of welfare. She is also a very honest person and she tried to retain something from her past life in the middle-class even when her daughter didn't.
In Fish Cheeks, Amy's mother was a role model because she gave her daughter a talking to about how she could look like the American girls on the outside, "But inside you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different. Your only shame is to have shame." She wants what is best for Amy even if she doesn’t like it. Amy's mother doesn't want her daughter to be something she is not.
In My Mothers Garden, Katlin's mother was a role model because she decided to go back to school to try to get them out of welfare. "She did not want us to stay in this housing project forever." She wanted her and her daughters to go back to the middle class. She also wanted to go to school and get a degree. She only wants the best for her daughters. She was also "radically honest." She didn't want her daughter to lie to people. She also planted a garden to retain something from her past life.
Some people would say that in Fish Cheeks, Amy's mom wasn't a role model because invited Robert and his family over even though she knew that Amy had a crush on him. She also outdid "herself [in] creating a strange menu." They would say that in My Mothers Garden, Katlin's mom was not a role model because she broke the rules by keeping a computer. It was "hidden under piles of bedsheets, far from any windows, in a dark corner of my mother's [bed]room.” These statements are not true because while Amy had a crush on Robert, her family was trying to get to know the minister and his family better and Katlin's mom was just trying to make the most of the computer and not waste it.
A role model is someone that you respect and you want to be like. The mothers in Fish Cheeks and My Mothers Garden are role models because they both want what is best for their daughters. They are also different from everyone else but still make the best of it. In Fish Cheeks, Amy's mother doesn't want her to be different just to fit in. She wants her daughter to just be herself. In My Mothers Garden, Katlin's mother is working a full-time job and is going back to school to try to get them out of the housing project.
