Ten thousand years ago, a mountainous volcano called Mount Mazama dominated the region, stretching almost 12,000 feet into the sky. Then, around eight thousand years ago, the volcano erupted, sending plumes of hot gas and ash shooting into the atmosphere. Magma gushed out of the volcano and burned the surrounding forest thirty miles in every direction.
