"Strongest wind cannot be seen," she said. In Amy Tan’s "Rules of the Game," the narrator reveals her relationship with her mother through a story about her childhood. In Edgar Allan Poe’s "The Tell-Tale Heart," the narrator reveals how and why he commits murder. And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it—oh so gently! At the beginning of the story, Waverly's mother teaches the saying "Strongest wind cannot be seen." "Bite back your tongue,” scolded my mother when I cried loudly, yanking her hand toward the store that sold bags of salted plums. In the excerpt, the reader learns that the narrator will eventually kill the old man. “Rules of the Game” uses parallel episodes to emphasize and develop the mother-daughter relationship. In Chinese we say, Come from South, blow with wind—boom!—North will follow. “The Tell-Tale Heart” also relies on foreshadowing to create suspense: I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him. This knowledge builds a growing sense of tension and unease in the reader. At home, she said, “Wise guy, he not go against wind. Both Both stories use the flashback technique to narrate events. Opposite me was my opponent, two angry black slits. These episodes occur at the beginning and end of the story. Strongest wind cannot be seen."
