Try it out! Highlight the central idea in the paragraph below. Oily Birds

Shortly after the oil tanker Exxon Valdez crashed onto the rocks in northern Alaska in 1989, volunteers from around the country rushed to help. They paid their own expenses to travel to Alaska. Once they arrived, they braved the freezing Alaskan winter to scrub black, sticky oil off the feathers and fur of shivering birds and mammals. Eleven million gallons of oil had spilled into the ocean. Tugboats hauled away the damaged ship. But the wildlife in the area was stuck, literally. Bald eagles, harbor seals, sea otters, and 1/4 million seabirds coated in oil died right away. Countless birds lost their lives, but the Exxon Valdez oil spill caused many other losses, as well.
