It's that time of year again. The weather is getting colder. The leaves are changing color. Time to put on a costume. Time to trick-or-treat. Time to celebrate everything that scares us. It's Halloween! But is
Halloween celebrated the same way around the world?
In Ireland, where Halloween allegedly originated, celebrations are similar to those in the United States,
according to the History Channel. Children dress up in costumes to go "trick-or-treating" in their
neighborhoods. The History Channel reports that the Irish also eat a kind of fruitcake called barnbrack at
Halloween. People say that the surprise baked inside the fruitcake can tell your future. If a ring is inside, it
means you will soon be married. A piece of straw means that a financially successful year is ahead.
Many countries have started celebrating Halloween similarly to how it is celebrated in the United States.
Worldwide, people celebrate with costumes, candy, parades and parties. According to People magazine,
many of these countries haven't traditionally celebrated Halloween. Many also have their own, different
holidays and festivals to celebrate the dead.
German Catholics celebrate All Saints Day on Nov. 1. They spend the day honoring the memories of saints
and dead family members, according to Reader’s Digest. Germans also hide their knives so returning
spirits won't be hurt.
In Mexico, Latin America and Spain, DĂa de Muertos is a celebration to honor and remember the dead. In
English, it is called Day of the Dead. The celebration lasts several days, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, according to
the Travel Channel. It is believed that the dead return to their former homes on Earth. People burn candles
and incense to help the dead find their way. People also decorate altars with sugar skulls, flowers and
photographs to honor deceased family members. They gather at gravesites and celebrate loved ones with
feasts, dancing and mariachi bands.
In Cambodia, Buddhists hold a festival called P’chum Ben, according to the National Endowment for the
Humanities. P’chum Ben is about honoring the dead. For 15 days in the fall, people bring sweet sticky rice
and beans wrapped in banana leaves to temples. There, they gather to hear music and speeches by
monks.
In the Czech Republic, people celebrate the Commemoration of All the Departed, reports Reader's Digest.
Czechs place flowers and candles on graves. A chair for each dead relative is placed near the fire at
home. According to Czech legend, the living can speak to the dead.
Autumn is marked by different celebrations all over the world. What do these celebrations have in
common? How do they differ? Think about how Halloween is celebrated in your own community. How do
America’s Halloween traditions compare to those found in other countries?
