personification.
"We hadn't any of us much to do with it, Carl. The land did it. It had its little joke. It pretended to
be poor because nobody knew how to work it right; and then, all at once, it worked itself. It woke
up out of its sleep and stretched itself, and it was so big, so rich, that we suddenly found we were
rich, just from sitting still."

Three examples of the use of personification

Explanation:

From the above examples, we can see that the examples of personification were portrayed. The "it" in each sentence referred to "the land". It talks about:

1. "The land" had its little joke.

- We know that land cannot joke.

2. "The land" pretended to be poor because nobody knew how to work it right...

- Land cannot pretend

3. "The land" woke up out of its sleep and stretched itself, and it was so big, so rich, that we suddenly found we were rich, just from sitting still.

- Land cannot wake up from sleep.

Personification speaks about given human qualities/characteristics to inanimate objects/elements. The above sentences exemplify this.

1. read the following excerpt from franklin d. roosevelt's "fireside chat 19":

on the other side of the picture, we must learn also to know that guerilla warfare against the germans in, let us say serbia or norway, us; that a successful russian offensive against the germans us; and that british successes on land or sea in any part of the world strengthen our hands.

remember always that germany and italy, regardless of any formal declaration of war, consider themselves at war with the united states at this moment just as much as they consider themselves at war with britain or russia. and germany puts all the other republics of the americas into the same category of enemies. the people of our sister republics of this hemisphere can be honored by that fact.
