Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
Dandelions are lovely yellow flowers that bloom in early spring. Their petals are wide open on a sunny day and they close on a cloudy or rainy day since there is no light. Dandelion means âa lionâs toothâ because it has jagged leaves which look like lionâs teeth.
Some people eat the young leaves in a salad or in a soup. After rinsing them, they usually put the cleaned leaves in boiling water to take away the bitter taste. The brilliant colour of the dandelion attracts many bees and butterflies which visit the flower for the nectar. Theses insects carry pollen from the flower to another which helps the seeds of the dandelion to grow.
Once a dandelion has received pollen from a bee or a butterfly, it will close its petal and hang its head. The flower starts to die while the seeds begin to grow. When the seeds are ripe, the flower head, which has been dropping, now turns upright again. When the flower head opens, the seeds will be carried away by wind, aided by their fluffy parachutes.
Some of the seeds may fall on the roadside, in the gardens and even along railway tracks. These hardy seeds usually survive wherever they have fallen. In the same season the following year, many more dandelions will appear.
