Many have tried to solve it and failed. The author of the Rosetta Stone, James cross Giblin wrote about this mystery. The author did a great job of staying on topic and on his thesis, he also made it inserting to read.

First the author James Cross Giblin stay on topic throughout the whole story. One example of this is: “Before the Rosetta Stone was discovered in 1799, no one knew how to read Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. Its meaning had been lost for almost 1400 years.” (Giblin The Mystery of the Rosetta Stone). This quote shows that even though she could have gone off to a side story he stayed on topic. One other example is: “Others stumbled on the correct definitions of a few hieroglyphs. No one knows exactly where the Greeks obtained this information.” (Giblin The Mystery of the Rosetta Stone)
