In "A Goodman Is Hard to Find," Flannery O'Connor presents two alternative visions of the
cosmos. The first is of a Godless, nihilistic universe. The second, a universe buoyed by
God's guiding hand. Although, most critics believe that her purpose is to shock the reader
into realizing the need for God's grace. It is hard to escape the fact that an entire family,
innocent children included, is gunned down in an act of mindless violence their bodies are
dumped in the woods or left in the ditch; as is the case with the grandmother's corpse. In
spite of the fact that she wants to show the need for God's grace. Such violence cannot
promote the presence of God in the world, thus those critics who believe O'Connor
presents a nihilistic vision are right.
