What temptation(s) does Gawain face? In what way does he succeed and/or fail? (Think about the exchange of “gifts” between Gawain and the Lord).
What are the three blows for? Gawain feels that he has failed in his quest. Why? What “gift” does the Green Knight give Gawain.
Who brings about the downfall of mankind? (generally and specifically) Who are the women Gawain meets?
Why do all the knights wear something that is a sign of Gawain’s disgrace? What happens “once guilt has touched a man”? (This is the moral lesson of the story.) There are many contrasts between the civilized and uncivilized world (and between civilized and uncivilized behavior). Describe some of the contrasts. Most heroes have some fault of character that they must overcome.
What is Gawain’s character flaw? (This is the test of character that all heroes face.) The hero of this story has changed from the heroes of Beowulf.
What new characteristics do you see?
