Passage 1 Questionable Competition

"I know I can win the stair race," thought Jared. "After all, I run to the bottom and climb back up at least three times a day!"

Being the youngest kid in the class was hard for Jared. He wanted to be like his peers, but only experience and time could elevate him to that esteem. He invested all of his energy on competing with everyone, hoping that maybe one day he would reign victoriously as champion. Barbi was the best dancer, Frank was the fastest typer, Elizabeth was the smartest girl in the class, and Kate was the most athletic. With so much talent, that left no room for poor Jared to shine. That is, until the stair race was established. At last, his time would come.

Passage 2

Winning Comes Easy

"It's going to be a busy day today," Kate said to herself as she looked over her agenda. "Helping the breakfast crew down at the nursing home, an important meeting with the principal, Ms. Phelps, and finally a quick stair race before heading back home."

Kate was so used to winning that she didn't put much thought or anticipation into competition anymore. It was essentially a known fact that if she was competing in an athletic competition, she was sure to win, especially today since her opponent was the youngest kid in the class. The stair race was no different. If something fluky happened, though, it would really matter because she was the longstanding winner of the school's field day, foot race, and even jump rope contest. Without another thought of the stair race, Kate rushed out the door to get her day started.
