Read this summary of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, and then answer the question that follows. Ebenezer Scrooge is a stingy old man who hoards money and refuses to indulge in any comforts for himself or his employee. He even refuses an invitation to spend Christmas with his nephew, saying "Bah humbug!" to the holiday. But then he is visited by several ghosts who show him how his greed and selfishness have led to the pain of others. He is also given a glimpse of the future, in which he dies alone and in misery. Scrooge promises to change, begging the ghosts to give him another chance. When he wakes up the next day, he makes good on his promise: Throwing off his miserly ways, Scrooge becomes a generous and openhearted man and spends the rest of his life happy and fulfilled.
