The winds kept changing and were unusually high. The sky was cloudy much of the time. There were many nasty gusts of wind and rain. This was the beginning of the hurricane we were to learn about later.

When the clouds became black and the wind rose, the sea grew angry and lashed at the boat with sharp claws. The stage was set for a life-and-death battle between the sea and our boat. We were prisoners on the boat, and-we though at the time-on the losing side. The boat was in danger of being overturned. Worst of all, we had little strength left for fighting the storm. We knew our small boat struggled with all its might against the waves, the wind, and the rising sea.
